Mammoth Lakes, California, is my happy place. This small mountain town provides a scenic and serene landscape and offers challenging opportunities to push yourself physically in the outdoors. It is both peaceful and exhilarating, which makes it an alluring destination to many travelers. As an adventure sports enthusiast, I have frequented Mammoth for 16 years—in the winter for skiing and in the warmer months for backpacking, boating, and biking—but this laid-back community is on the precipice of change.
In December 2025, Mammoth Lakes welcomed its first luxury hotel in 18 years, the Limelight Mammoth. And the town is seeing other developments, too—the luxury resort residence Rockspring (known for its emphasis on wellness) is already under construction.
