As I drive along a two-lane road in west Sonoma County lined with redwood trees, I keep my windows down to smell the earthiness of the forest and feel the cool breeze. Slivers of light break through the trees, with swaying branches casting shadows that seem to dance across the asphalt. This is not the wine country that many associate with the Sonoma region—this is the Bohemian Highway.
The road is only about 10 miles long, but it’s packed with things to see and do. This Northern California corridor weaves a winding path through the charming small towns of Freestone, Occidental, and Monte Rio. Technically, the drive can be done in 30 minutes, but it’s worth slowing down to explore the natural surroundings, chat with the welcoming locals, and embrace the reprieve from the buzz of daily life.
