I’ve Lived in Southern California for 16 Years and This Is My Favorite Small Town—and It’s Called ‘The City of the Arts’

Costa Mesa

With Broadway shows, incredible dining, and a vibrant museum scene, there isn’t much more you could ask for.

As I saunter across one of the skybridges at the UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art, light streams through the angled windows above and bounces off the curved white terracotta tile walls—casting shadows that dance across the glossy surface. This is the newest addition to Costa Mesa’s arts scene, incorporating Broadway shows, symphony concerts, visual arts, and outdoor sculptures. 

Having lived in Orange County for 16 years, I frequent this under-the-radar city, which also has high-end shopping that rivals Rodeo Drive, restaurants spanning from farm-to-table to Michelin-starred, and sunlit beaches nearby. Unlike the laid-back beach towns Southern California is known for, Costa Mesa is a vibrant mid-sized city worth visiting for its creative threads that weave together food, fashion, and the arts scene. It’s where I go to trade my flip-flops for heels.
